A Glossary of Model Horse Terms

Action Stock Horse Foal*
- BHR
Black Horse Ranch, a mail order firm in Nevada run by Karen Grimm that deals in Breyers and other molds, plus is
currently producing their own line of imported resin models.
- CAS, CAM, CAF
Classic Arabian Stallion, Mare and Foal*
- CE
Commemorative Edition, A Breyer model made in a limited quantity, usually 10,000 pieces, and limited to one year only.
- Chalky
Breyer model, usually from the oil-crisis era of the 1970s, where Breyer experimented with different plastics. Often these
were brown or grey, therefore any white on a model had to be painted, giving it a "chalky" appearance. These are
generally not that much more valuable than models of the same era made from the usual white cellulose acetate plastic.
- Clas
Classic, refering to the series of Breyers in the 1/12" scale. Also including what has been refered to as "The After School
Herd" and "B Ranch" series.
- CM
Custom or Customized. A Breyer or other model horse that has its original factory finish altered, often times this involves
repositioning the model, painting it completely different, and adding real hair or sculpted manes and tails.

Cantering Welsh Pony*
- Decorator
A group of models produced by Breyer approximately 1964-1965 in cornflower blue with white points ("Wedgewood"),
dappled blue with white points ("Copenhagen"), Metallic Gold with white points ("Gold Charm") and dappled gold with
- white points ("Florentine"). A limited edition Gold Charm Secretariat was issued in 1989 to commemorate Secretariat's
demise. This model is quite common and does not have nearly the value of the 1960's releases. Also produced as a
Commemorative Edition was "Hyksos", the Black Stallion model in a metallic "Ageless Bronze" in 1991. Special Editions
of Decorators include the Breyerfest Raffle Models for 1991 (Wedgewood Sham, Copenhagen San Domingo, Gold
Charm Man O'War and Gold Florentine Legionarrio III). (20 models of each). Also produced in 1990 were a small
amount of silver dappled Proud Arabian Mares ("Silver Filligree") as judge's awards at the Breyerfest Show. The raffle
model for that year was also a Gold Florentine "Misty of Chincoteauge".

Breyers with a high gloss finish, generally from the early 60s to early 70s, although some later models came with this
finish.

"Just About Horses", a small, full-color magazine published by Breyer to promote their models and the hobby in general.
- LB
Little Bit, second smallest scale of Breyers, also known as "Saddle Club" series
- LE
Limited Edition. Refers to a model horse produced for a limited amount of time or in limited numbers.
- LP
Lady Phase. Refers to Breyer #40, "Lynn Anderson's Lady Phase", standing Quarter Horse Mare in red sorrel made
from 1976-1985. This mold is also used for many later models.
- LSASE
Large Self Addressed, Stamped Envelope, business-sized envelope usually.

Two cable TV networks devoted to home shopping. Periodically each network has "Breyer Hours" where they feature
Breyers available through the mail. Occasionally Breyer will produce a Special Run available only through these
companies.
- REP
Repaint. A model horse that has been repainted over the factory finish and is no longer considered Original Finish.
RR or RRH
A model horse that has had its position changed in some manner, plus a repainted finish. Option is the addition of hair
mane and tails or sculpted manes and tails.

Stablemate. Smallest of the Breyer series. Also known as "Stablemates Saddle Club." Taken from molds leased to
Breyer by the Hagen-Renaker company, these figurines were originally produced in ceramic by H-R.

Special Run. A model produced outside of a company's usual line, sometimes for dealers, sometimes for model horse
events exclusively.
- Stone, Peter
One-time Marketing Director for Breyer/Reeves International, a familiar sight at "signing parties" held around the nation,
at Breyerfest, and on QVC. Peter left his position with Reeves Autumn 1995 under undetermined circumstances and is
now currently associated with Black Horse Ranch in producing and marking a line of resin-cast horses called "The Stone
Collection."

Usually a one-of-a-kind piece painted at the factory to try out different colors on different molds.
- THHN
"The Hobby Horse News", a bimonthly magazine published by Paula Hecker ([email protected]) devoted to the model
horse hobby.

"The Model Horse Gazette", a bimonthly magazine devoted to the model horse hobby ([email protected]).
- Trad
The largest scale of Breyer.
- TU
Touched Up. A minor addition of markings to an original finish model, such as white stockings or a white star, or black
mane and tail. This is no longer considered Original Finish and is considered a Repaint by some judges.

Series of Breyers produced in the early 1960's with finishes painted to simulate carved wood. Also found on some of the
Hartland models.
- Model Horse Manufacturers
- BREYER (Brey.)
Heavy plastic, from 14" tall to 2", great detail, made since 1950 and still made today. The most common and available,
and favored by collectors and showers for their realism and affordability! Made in USA except for the Stablemate Series
and the Porcelain figures.
- HAGEN-RENAKER (H-R)
Ceramic Pottery, from 14" tall down to 1/2", extremely detailed and collectible, made in California since the 1940's and
highly collectible.
- HARTLAND (Hart)
Both brittle and heavy plastic, more stylized than the Breyers though the same sizes. Made from the 1960's until just
recently. Also made under the names of CIRCLE H, HARTLAND STROMBECKER, HARTLAND
COLLECTIBLES, and STEVENS MFG.
- NORTH LIGHT (NL)
Made of resin and imported from England, from 10" to 2", very nice detail and currently made.
- ARTIST RESINS
These are often original sculptures created by individual hobbyists and are then cast in polymer resins by small casting
companies. They are generally very limited in number, and almost always finished by the sculpting artist. Some are
available unpainted, to be finished by someone other than the original artist. Never to be confused with mass-produced
figures such as North Lights, Stone Critters, etc.

Ceramic, made in England.
- LOZA ELECTRICA
Ceramic animal figurines produced in Mexico by Eric Renaker, a relative of the founders of Hagen-Renaker.
- Some Model Horse Events
- Breyerfest
An annual convention put on by Breyer, usually at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY. Each year they produce a
SR model for this event offered only at BF. Held last weekend of July. Information on this event is published in "Just
About Horses" usually in late Springtime. Best way to make sure you don't miss out is to subscribe to JAH and keep on
top of all the news! Breyerfest for 1996 will be held the weekend of July 26-28.
- The Model Horse Jamboree
An annual model horse event combining live shows, demonstrations, tours, swap meets, a dinner event and SR, held
annually in California the final weekend in August.
- The North American Nationals
A live show held annually bringing together the top placers from approved shows across North America to compete for
National Championships. To be held in 1996 in California in conjunction with The Model Horse Jamboree. Entrants must
have qualified at NAN-Qualifying live shows prior to the event.
